1.

Only use peat free composts

Peatlands store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests. Industrial extraction of peat releases carbon and adds to greenhouse gases.

2.

Protect air quality!

Keep car use and domestic wood fires to a minimum and sign up to a renewable energy supplier. The fumes from motor cars, wood fires and bonfires cause serious air pollution which is harmful to plants and animals, including humans, and which destabilise the climate.

3.

Avoid using chemical pesticides and weedkillers at home or in your garden

Encourage birds, hedgehogs, slow-worms, etc which remove pests and will achieve a natural balance.

4.

Add a new habitat to enhance biodiversity in your garden

…or even on a windowsill. A pond, bee hotel, log pile, an area of long grass, hoverfly lagoon, wildflower area. Even on a small scale, these things make a big difference.

Join a community group planting trees

Learn about your local trees and protect them. Trees are the ultimate carbon capture and storage machines, and provide food and shelter for thousands of species, including humans.
